Sometimes, no matter how many great choices there are, you’ve got to "pick" your favorite. And, probably, the single most common question
Aloha Joe
® and mainland editor, Donna Manz, are asked is:
"What should we do on this trip to Hawai`i?"

Given that "favorites" are personal evaluations, Aloha Joe® and Donna are sharing with Alohajoe.com friends our own choices when choices really have to be made! We’ve arranged our favorites island-by-island, this month beginning with The Gathering Place –O`ahu. Next time, the diversity of the
Big Island of Hawai`i will be featured.

While some of our favorites are prominent, others may be a delightful surprise. Some were coin toss-ups because we couldn’t make up our minds! Take our responses in stride; we had fun compiling them. Hope you enjoy reading them.

Creation - A Polynesian Journey
South Seas Adventure and Dinner Show
by Donna Manz

You've done it all in Waikiki………..you sunned, you surfed, you luau-ed until Kalua pig is appearing in your dreams……….you learned the words to
The Hukilau Song and the family is garbed in aloha wear……….
But wait!  Don't hang up that credit card yet…..

Creation - A Polynesian Journey is beyond "been there, done that".
Myth and magic spirit you away to the Polynesia of ancient and modern times as stunning special effects and illusion enhance this musical excursion to the exotic islands of the South Pacific. Elaborately costumed performers represent the music and dance of Hawai`i, Samoa, Fiji, Tahiti, the Marquesa islands and New Zealand, climaxed by the spectacular Samoan fire knife dance.
Each time I visit this show, there's something new about it.

Creation - A Polynesian Journey is a multi-media extravaganza and is lots of fun. Crashing through the showroom's darkened stillness, explosive volcanic eruptions give birth to the islands of the South Seas. As Polynesian man and woman are created, the journey begins. The mythical voyage through time and place is narrated by a traditional Hawaiian storyteller and through him the Polynesian migrations are brought to life with traditional music, mesmerizing special effects and colorful props.

The good looking cast of accomplished dancers and musicians celebrates the cultural diversity of the Polynesian triangle. From the pulsating Tahitian otea to the fluid Hawaiian hula, from the dexterity of the spinning poi ball routine to the pounding Samoan sasa, comely young women evoke the sensual beauty of the South Pacific islands. Strong warriors perform the powerful New Zealand Maori haka and the fierce Fijian war dance, wielding war clubs in depiction of battle.
The Polynesian journey continues to modern times as boatloads of tourists arrived in Hawai`i during the romanticized first half of the 20th century.

Creation - A Polynesian Journey
sings and dances a tribute to the legendary Waikiki beach boys and the surfer era. With statehood came rock 'n' roll, Elvis and a love affair with the islands. The romance of the South Seas is never far away and the audience plays guest at a native wedding as the familiar melody of the Hawaiian Wedding Song graces the setting. That song is a Hawai`i standard and for those who have watched the wedding scene in Elvis Presley's
"Blue Hawai`i", imagining Elvis crooning to Maile comes readily.

The segments are intertwined with dramatic narration and magical illusion, not at all at odds with the magic the South Seas inspire. Creation sets the scene with a themed storyline and life-sized props. At home in the Sheraton Princess Ka`iulani Hotel's Ainahau Showroom, Creation - A Polynesian Journey is offered in conjunction with either dinner or cocktail seating.
The show is presented five nights a week, on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Dinner buffet includes prime rib, Hawaiian-style baked chicken, mahimahi, Hawaiian curry stew, Asian noodles and other hot entrees. An assortment of sushi and salad complements the hot food.
Dessert and a tropical drink are included.
