ACADEMY OF HAWAIIAN ARTS BRINGS
“WAIKIKI” TO SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
Second Mainland Performance of
Major Hawaiian Dance Concert
Redondo Beach, CA—On Saturday, July 24, 2010,
Kumu Hula (master teacher of hula) Mark Keali‘i Ho‘omalu and the
Oakland-area-based Academy of Hawaiian Arts will reprise their hit dance concert
“Waikiki (– The Enchantment),”
at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center
in Redondo Beach, CA.
“Waikiki (– The Enchantment)” marks the Academy’s return to
Southern California for a presentation of its original, modern interpretation of
classical Hawaiian dance. This
full-scale dance concert performance will focus on the celebrated location,
Waikiki, from impressions of life in the area before Western contact through its
“Golden Age” of surf boys, hotels and Hollywood starlets, and follows sold out
performances in cities throughout Japan as well as a Northern California
premiere last November.
“Waikiki
(– The Enchantment)” illustrates Ho‘omalu’s creative interpretations of Hawaiian
dance and history, specifically highlighting the transition of a royal
battle-turned-playground into an internationally renowned tourist and
entertainment area. It will be
performed on July 24, 2010, at 7:00 p.m. at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts
Center, 1935 Manhattan Beach Boulevard, Redondo
Beach, CA 90278-1220.
Doors will open one hour
before the show.
General admission (open
seating) tickets are $35. Tickets
are available online at www.ahahula.com.
For ticket information, contact Melinda
Manuel or e-mail tickets@academyofhawaiianarts.org.
